RPL Laboratory Demo and Remodel

Hanford Area

The RPL Lab Renovation project consisted of a remodel of four radiation-contaminated laboratories in Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Radiochemical Processing Laboratory (RPL), a Hazard Category II Non-Reactor Nuclear Facility.

Fowler General Construction (FGC) worked closely with Radioactive Protection Technicians (RPT)to completely gut the labs down to bare concrete and rebuild from the ground up.  Demolition included the removal of contaminated fumehoods and all associated ductwork, asbestos piping, floor tile and Hauserman panels, as well as countertops, cabinets, walls, plumbing and electrical.  Daily coordination with the facility was required for all activities generating noise, vibration, and odors.

The build-back consisted of new plumbing, electrical, data, walls, casework, flooring, ceiling, lights, and alterations to the fire sprinkler system.  12 new radiochemical fumehoods with welded stainless steel ductwork, vacuum pots, snorkels, and a 3-part 13,000lb lead vault were also installed to provide RPL new state of the art laboratories built to NQA-1 nuclear quality requirements.
